WHAT’S IN A TALENT?

1. archaic : a characteristic feature, aptitude, or disposition of a person or animal.

     2. the natural endowments of a person

     3. a : a special often athletic, creative, or artistic aptitude

         b : general intelligence or mental power : ability

It is said that everyone has talent; be it the ability to sing or be athletic or have some great mental intelligence. Talent comes in all shapes and sizes and each individual, from the least to the greatest is blessed with some type of talent.

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus relates a parable of trio of servants and how they utilized money given to them by their master. The money in the parable was called a ‘talent’. Whatever the value of this currency was, the master expected the servants to make it grow. Two did and one failed to do so. The master was infuriated with the servant who failed to multiply his portion of the talents.

V.24-30

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Why was the master so angry with the servant who failed to produce and why should it matter to you?

In Genesis, The first commandment to living creatures is ‘be fruitful and multiply’. “Be Fruitful” is the VERY first command. God wants us to be fruitful in our lives. We were not created to take up space and suck up air!

“Multiply” is the second command. It is not only the duty of each of us to be fruitful, but to multiply and grow this fruitfulness. Be it , production, reproduction or to be something, it is to be fruitful and multiplied.

Each person was created with a purpose and by the reading of the parable, our Master, God, is disgusted when we fail to be fruitful and multiply. ‘Wicked, lazy servant!’ are not very flattering words.

So, let’s ask ourselves; “Would God send me a Boaz who is not fruitful nor multiplying his talents?”

Ladies, evaluate well your potential Boaz. God will not send you anyone who He disapproves of by His own Word! Stop making excuses for “Mr. Right’s” Wrongs!

I’m not saying your Boaz has to be a brain surgeon, a wealthy business man or a rising star. What I am saying, is that if the only ‘talents’ your Boaz has is beer drinking, video game playing, baby making or excuse making; he might not be your real Boaz!

To be fruitful and multiply applies to YOU also! You cannot be fruitful and multiply with someone who is bearing no fruit nor multiplying his talents! Scripture says “A house divided cannot stand!” (Mark 3:25) You cannot move ahead together if you are moving in two different directions.

Furthermore, God says, “Do not be unequally yoked.” (2 Corinthians 6:14) This warning is aimed at not being attached with unbelievers, but the context is similar any relationship. What does a woman who follows God and is trying build a progressing life with a great Boaz, have to do with a man who is less than spiritual and failing to be fruitful or multiply his talents?

Be careful that your ‘Boaz” doesn’t make you a worthless servant, instead of making you see and build upon your worth, by adding to your life and not taking away from it.

v.29 “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”

Choose Wisely!
